Critical Care Unit

The Critical Care Unit has a multidisciplinary approach to patient care with highly trained staff and state-of-the-art-equipment.

The team includes specialist and other medical staff, Critical Care trained nursing staff, and a range of allied health personnel (dietician, pharmacist, physiotherapist, speech pathologist, social worker, wound management therapist, diabetic and other patient educations). Our patients often need extended rehabilitation following critical illness and this involves another multidisciplinary team.

The Intensive Care Unit at Ballarat Health Services provides life support for patients from Ballarat and surrounding region. Respiratory, cardiac and kidney failure can be managed by highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment. The Unit also provides a hospital nurse liaison and medical emergency team service for hospital inpatients. A High Dependency Unit is co-located within the Intensive Care and provides care for patients following major surgery or for seriously ill patients requiring intensive monitoring and observation as part of their care.

Patient's relatives require special support during a critical illness and the Unit is supported by hospital social workers, pastoral care and compassionate staff.

Ballarat Health Services Critical Care Unit has 12 beds that manage intensive care, high dependency and coronary care admissions. The unit looks after more than a 1000 patients per year from Ballarat and surrounding regions. It is the major regional referral unit for the Grampians region and on a daily basis manages patients with serious or critical illnesses from throughout this area.

The Unit is committed to evidence based practice and actively participates in national and international trials with a dedicated research nurse as part of our team.

The Unit, in collaboration with the critical care educator, supports post graduate nursing studies in Critical Care through our affiliation with the University of Melbourne. (Visit Ballarat Health Services Education Centre for more information).
