Harmony Week - Raj Taneja
As part of Harmony Week 2022, we're sharing stories of our staff; where they come from, and why diversity creates a richness within our community. Our first profile is of Raj Taneja, Manager Carer Support Service at Ballarat Health Services - Part of Grampians Health.
Describe your background
I was born in Delhi, India to a loving, caring family who I miss a lot. I came to Ballarat about 18 years ago and instantly fell in love with the place and the people. The warmth, the humour, the friendliness, the care, and the compassion of the Ballarat community is truly remarkable and made me feel like I belong here.
How long have you been working at BHS?
13 incredibly proud years.
What does diversity mean to you?
I believe that diversity is the spice of our lives. We all seek and enjoy diversity in taste, experiences, personal possessions, even colour of the walls in our house… then why not treasure diversity in skin colour, language, religion, race, values, beliefs, personal preferences.
What would you like other people to know about your heritage?
I was born in a Hindu family but have always believed in spirituality more than religion. I grew up learning to respect all religions, cultures, personal beliefs and values. We were a close knit family and I will always the treasure the memories that we created together. Sharing, connecting, respect and tolerance are close to my heart and have played a big part in shaping and defining who I am.
This year’s theme is ‘everyone belongs’, what does that mean to you?
For me, ‘everyone belongs’ signifies a bond between being proud of our heritage, feeling assured about our values and beliefs, connecting with and contributing to the community we have all chosen to be a part of, and treating people the way they want to be treated.
