For the past 10 years, the staff on Ballarat Health Services’ Paediatrics ward have been giving back to the community at Christmas by creating a special food and/or gift hamper for a local family in need.

Each year, the Salvation Army give the 2South Paediatrics team a profile of information on a local family in need. With the details of what could most benefit that family, the Paediatric staff donate items to try and ease the burden at Christmas. The result is boxes, baskets and hampers of gifts and food specially chosen with that family in mind.

Clincal Nurse Specialist Rachel Walker has been coordinating the program with the Salvation Army for the past few years, and says it’s another way for the team to help those in need in the community.

“Being in paediatrics, we see firsthand the effect lack of money and stress can have on families, and at Christmas, this only increases,” Rachel said.  “For our ward, this is just a little something we love to do as our way of giving back to the community.”

This year, Ballarat Health Services’ Christmas Appeal is raising funds for a mechanical CPR machine for our Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab). For more information about the Christmas Appeal, or to donate, click here.
