Olympian Steve Moneghetti, alongside Hop Temple owner Brian Taylor, visited Ballarat Base Hospital's Special Care Nursery to raise awareness and support for Hop Temple’s annual Hopathon.

The Hopathon is a 600-metre fun run, walk, or hop event, taking place on Saturday, 16 November. It will dedicate this year’s fundraising to purchasing Bililux phototherapy lights for newborns with jaundice in the nursery.

“The Hopathon isn’t really about the running – it’s about bringing people together for a worthwhile cause,” said Steve Moneghetti, Hopathon Ambassador.

“We saw firsthand today how funds raised directly support the hospital – from recliner chairs that provide comfort for young parents, to blue light therapy that brings peace of mind to parents knowing their babies are receiving the care they need. It’s clear that contributions from the Hopathon make a genuine difference. And if you get a fun run, a fantastic afternoon and a chance to connect with others – that’s a wonderful bonus.”

Brian Taylor, owner of Hop Temple, emphasized the importance of supporting the community.

“We’re incredibly proud to be part of a community like Ballarat, where looking after each other comes naturally. The Special Care Nursery provides essential care to families right here, keeping them close to home. Many of our regulars have been touched by the nursery’s work and supporting it through the Hopathon is our way of giving back and strengthening our community.”

Tara Fabris, Acting Nurse Unit Manager of the Special Care Nursery, said the Phototherapy Devices were vital for babies.

“Premature babies often experience jaundice, and while many recover naturally, others need phototherapy using specialised blue lights to lower bilirubin levels. These devices ensure timely and effective treatment, allowing families to bring their babies home sooner. This equipment is essential for our care of newborns and will make a significant impact.”

The Hopathon will kick off at 11:30 am on Saturday, 16 November 2024. Tickets are available at https://hoptemple.com.au/events/hopathon-2023/ until sold out, priced at $55 each. Tickets include a T-shirt, headband, medal, drink and donation to the Special Care Nursery.

After the race, participants can join the post-run festivities in Hop Lane, featuring live music, food, auctions, a raffle and refreshments.
