MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses a strong magnet and radiofrequency energy to produce images in any plane through the body. MRI pictures show the soft tissues of the body, muscles, nerves, brain, discs, ligaments and cartilage. During the scan, you will by lying inside the tunnel of the scanner. The MRI will make some loud tapping noises during the exam so earplugs or headphones can be provided. Music can also be provided during the scan, if you wish.
An X-ray (radiograph) involves using a small dose of radiation to produce pictures of bones and other internal tissues, such as lungs and bowel. The images show the parts of your body in different shades of black and white.
An Ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to make an image of a person’s internal body structures, is safe for use during pregnancy and generally non-invasive. Common reasons for Ultrasound scanning include investigations of a person’s abdominal and pelvic organs, musculoskeletal and vascular systems, and to check foetal development during pregnancy.
