Grampians BreastScreen is your local screening provider.

Who are we?

We are an all-female team very experienced and highly qualified and we are here to deliver the best care to you. You are at the heart of the work we do, which is to reduce the impact of breast cancer and save lives through early detection.

We are part of BreastScreen Victoria which is a free population screening program for women over the age of 40. Breast screening is proven to be most effective for those in the 50 to 74 year age group.

Why should I get a BreastScreen?

More than 75% of breast cancers occur in women over 50 and regular breast screens are the best way to find breast cancer early.

We invite you to choose to have a screen regularly, and to be proactive in managing your own health and wellbeing, encouraging your friends and relatives to do the same. Your action today could save a life.

What will happen at my appointment?

You will be welcomed by a BreastScreen Victoria staff member who will explain what happens at the clinic and a female radiographer will take you into the screening room.

When you are ready, our radiographer will take two pictures of each breast, four pictures in total. You will stand in front of a special X-ray machine, and she will gently position each breast on a plate on the machine. Another plate will firmly press your breast and hold it still to take the image. The radiographer will repeat the steps to take a side view of the breast as well.

It is normal to feel some pressure during a breast screen, but this should only last a few seconds. Your breasts need to be pressed firmly between two plates in the screening machine so that a clear picture can be taken. Your radiographer will work with you to make sure that the breast screen is as comfortable as possible and you can always ask to stop the screen at any time.
