A CT scan (computed tomography) is a medical imaging procedure that uses x-rays and digital computer technology to create detailed pictures of the body.
The CT scan is a non-invasive, painless and relatively safe procedure that doesn’t require any recovery time.
What to expect?
Our staff will inform you if any preparation is needed for your scan.
For some scans, you will need to fast (no food) for 4 hours, but can continue to drink oral fluids prior to the appointment.
You could also be asked to have a blood test prior to your appointment, if your doctor has requested the scan to be done with contrast.
Pregnancy
If you are, or think you may be pregnant, please tell your Doctor and Radiographer as x-rays can be harmful to an unborn baby. An alternate test may be an option.
Diabetic
If you have diabetes and a fast is required, discuss the management of the fast with your doctor.
If you have any questions, ring our department and ask to speak to one of our nursing staff.
What is a CT Interventional procedure?
A CT Interventional Procedure is preformed using imaging machines for guidance and is invasive.
In most instances, a preliminary scan will be performed to locate the exact point to be injected. Our specialist radiologist uses CT scanning to guide a needle into your body for the purposes of taking a tissue biopsy or injecting anaesthetic/anti-inflammatory drugs.
What preparation is required for a CT Interventional procedure?
Take all your medication as normal. If you are on blood thinners, please contact our nursing staff on 5320 4270 to discuss as soon as possible.
For some CT Interventional procedures, you will need a driver on the day, as you will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. It is important you rest when you get home and avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 24 hours.
